In April 2020, a month into quarantine, I began a series of twelve paintings of a single window in my home. This show contains a few paintings from that series and a few that have come after. When we were all cooped up indoors, our living room became my studio. The window in this space captured my attention, this view being the most dynamic of the windows in the home. Being home for long stretches of time wasn’t a new experience for me; I’ve always been a homebody. This window became a constant. The changes that the window undergoes through time and weather are intensified in the paintings. With a focus on the visual experience of the window, saturated colors move away from reality but replicate the feeling of having fresh eyes and the surprises that different moments hold. The repetition of the window becomes a symbol for the passage of time I experienced while being contained in my home. These window paintings gave me something concrete and consistent to focus on while the world outside our house felt, and still feels, out of control. I continued this series through the summer and into the fall and have since moved back to my studio on campus but have continued this exploration. This sustained focus on a single subject has opened up my color palette. The white surfaces of the window trim, that acts as a frame, and the neighboring siding take on surprising colors. These moments of intrigue are what I aim to capture. Painting this window has been a catalyst for a really positive change in my studio practice, and continues to influence my most recent work.
